Eyes Wide Open: How the Markets Have Moved Year-to-Date

By: Donald Albach

As we move through the first quarter of 2026, investors are taking stock of how the markets have shifted amid a mix of tech leadership, geopolitical tensions, and macroeconomic forces. From soaring mega-cap stocks to a nearly flat S&P 500, this year has highlighted the delicate balance between risk and reward. A small group of mega-cap stocks, dubbed the Magnificent Seven,” continues to dominate U.S. equity performance. These seven companies, Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOG/GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), Meta Platforms (META), NVIDIA (NVDA), and Tesla (TSLA), have become the engines of market gains over the past several years. Since January 1, 2026, these stocks have delivered double-digit year-to-date gains, with some members posting returns exceeding 15 to 20%. Their outsized influence now accounts for roughly 40% of the S&P 500’s market capitalization, illustrating how concentrated U.S. stock performance has become. Before the outbreak of hostilities in Iran in late February, these tech leaders had already slowed relative to their historical dominance, signaling a subtle shift from their prior years of market leadership.

A Flat Market and Rising Risks

The S&P 500, the benchmark for broad U.S. equities, is approaching essentially flat performance over the last six months. After touching record highs in January 2026, the index has pulled back by approximately 5%, driven in part by geopolitical concerns and rising commodity prices. Year-to-date, the S&P 500 is down roughly 3%, highlighting the contrast between broad market performance and concentrated tech leadership. Energy markets have become a focal point in 2026, with Brent crude hovering around $112 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude above $100. Prices have surged due to supply concerns linked to the Iran conflict, adding inflationary pressure and influencing investor sentiment across all sectors.

Fed Policy and Rising Yields

Monetary policy remains in the spotlight as the Federal Reserve navigates inflation and economic growth. The benchmark federal funds rate remains in the 3.5%–3.75% range, and investors are closely watching whether rising oil prices and geopolitical instability will influence future rate decisions. Long-term Treasury yields have edged to the highest level since July, at 4.423%, while mortgage rates remain elevated. Currently, 30-year fixed rates are around 6.3%, reflecting both policy and market expectations.

Rising Geopolitical Tensions, Steady Markets

The war in Iran has amplified market volatility and heightened investor caution. The conflict has contributed to rising oil prices and broader uncertainty in equities. Despite these headwinds, markets have not experienced severe declines, suggesting a level of resilience in investor expectations and corporate fundamentals.

Lessons for Navigating 2026

So far, this year has highlighted the contrast between concentrated tech gains and broad market stagnation. The Magnificent Seven continue to drive returns, while the S&P 500 lingers near flat, oil prices climb, and interest rates hold steady. For investors, the key takeaway is clear: keep your eyes wide open. Understanding how concentrated leadership, geopolitical risk, and macroeconomic factors interact is essential for navigating a year of uncertainty and opportunity.
